It is time for me to link up with Laura for her summer series of Diggin' In to Next Year!
Teach Reading Comprehension! I have been through many changes when it comes to the way I teach reading! I have been in schools in which we were "forced" to use very restrictive, very scripted lessons every day. I have been in wonderful schools that allowed me to do as I see fit. I have done everything from basals and novel units to Guided Reading and Daily Five. I was even a Reading Specialist for awhile and was trained in Reading Recovery. Things have changed a lot in the 14 years since I became a teacher. As they say in education, if you stay around long enough, what we "used" to do will be what we do again! So, what is THE best way to teach reading? What does research show? What has been proven IN THE CLASSROOMS (NOT just one or two, and NOT in a lab somewhere!)? That is what I would like to spend some time delving in to this summer!
I definitely plan to look more into Daily Five and Cafe. They make sense to me and I love workshop models. I also want to read and learn more about Close Reading. Responding to reading has always been one of my main focuses as well and since it is a struggle for many kiddos, I would love to implement more of that that and give students more opportunities to practice.
Of course, once I started Guided Reading, I fell in love and can't imagine doing anything else! Until I am convinced otherwise, it will be my go-to, for-sure, no-matter-what reading "program."
Here are a couple of my items. The Phonics chart has vowel sounds and picture clues that go with it. I have found this to be very useful to keep at a guided reading table as well as to add to the students' notebooks. The Daily 5 literacy and math center signs are FREE through a Google Docs download.
