It is time for Mentor Monday again! This week, we are tackling Parts of Speech. UGH!! I know, I said the bad words! :) The teaching of parts of speech has changed so much in last 20 or so years. Do you remember diagramming sentences? I sure do (and I secretly liked to do it, but I'm crazy!). While I haven't ever taught diagramming sentences, I do think it is an important skill to teach. However, I agree with much of the current research that says that teaching it isolation doesn't really do anything, especially for elementary kids. Instead, teaching them how to use the parts of speech to make their writing better is much more useful! And, the best way to teach how to be a good writer is to show them how the "pros" do it!
Here are some of the books I use to teach parts of speech. Please note that when I say "teach" them, sometimes I mean that I am reading the book for another purpose and I might mention the part of speech at the same time, while other times, I am trying to get the whole class to focus on the Vivid Verbs in their writing.
What books do YOU like to use to teach parts of speech? I would love to add more books to my shelves!
